The Mantra – Word for Word Meaning
je The Sanskrit word is jaya, here pronounced je. In the religious story telling, je can mean victory of Gods over demons in celestial battle. In peaceful terms, it can mean “success”, wishing ourselves success in our spiritual practice and healing.
ma can be short for mam which means “I or me”
Kali is the Name for Deity in our song. It can signify overcoming the ego. In this, we can recognise that we rely on our ego to assert ourselves in most social settings especially in business, and therefore the ego is not something to “get rid of”. Moreover, if we try to fight our own ego, we will only escalate the conflict and disturb the peace.
However, the ego is one of the greatest obstacles to spiritual liberation. All our carefully constructed defences actually prevent us from being free in the fullest sense. Therefore, to access real inner peace, we need to find some way to get around the ego. Allow it to take a rest, go on holiday for a little while, while we do our spiritual practice. Please read my treatise Spiritual Practice, chapter F : The Ego.
In the religious personification, Kali is quite a fierce if not frightening Goddess. This can suggest the fear that the ego has, that it might lose its ability to control and be in control. Therefore, the tactic we can use is to somehow enlist the aid of the ego, and get it “on side”. I always try to use this tactic in my writings.
Devi is also written deva. This is the word for Deity in our song. It literally means “radiant Being”. This can suggest becoming radiant with the spiritual Qualities, cultivating them until they shine out from us, so others can easily sense this.
Put these together, and our song can mean –
