Comments on the Mantra.
This is called the Rudrah Gayatri mantra. These Gayatri mantras are about guidance and motivation.
Meditation (dhimahi) on Deity (tat) can be any effective meditation that slows down thinking, focusses our attention, and declutters and dechatters the mind. Until our mind is still, clear, bright, focussed, and very happy to be like this. Then we are in the best position to cultivate the spiritual Qualities like happiness, contentment, good will, enjoyment, clarity.
The mantra then advises us to persist until we are fully radiant (maha deva) with these beautiful Qualities, for they are enlightening (vidmahe). They also guide and urge (pracho dayat) us further along the spiritual Path. Along the Path to Shiva = Rudrah. Along the Path of Shiva.
tat just means “that”, but in Kirtan it always refers to the Presence of Deity.

purushaya is properly spelled purushāya and pronounced purushaaya. purushāya is the dative form of the noun purusha, and means “moving towards purusha”. Purusha can mean pure consciousness, or the in-dwelling spirit.
Likewise, devaya is properly spelled devāya, and is the dative form of the noun deva. Deva can mean Presence that is radiant with happiness, contentment, good will, enjoyment.
